The International Marine Aquarium Conference - 2008

Dr. Adelaide Rhodes

I have spent the last 6 years trying to develop new methods for copepod
aquaculture. Reliable large-scale copepod aquaculture will allow
researchers to complete the life cycle of many elusive marine fish
species. Having copepods available for laboratory use will also allow
researchers to test hypotheses on fish growth and development, larval
fish behavior, predator-prey interactions, etc. Copepods can also hold
the key to the aquaculture of many valuable and important foodfish and
ornamental species.

ABSTRACT

"Frontiers in Fish Growing - Newest Technologies in Marine Fish Aquaculture that can Benefit the Hobbyist"

Diet, disease and cost economics are the three biggest challenges encountered by fish breeders. New developments in larval fish production related to innovative diets and associated disease management techniques such as probiotics, immunostimulants and live feed systems can improve the survival and growth of ornamental marine fish species.

This presentation reviews the latest larval feeding treatment techniques used in marine ornamental aquaculture to improve larval growth and development, and reduce the risk of disease. Of course, there will be plenty of discussion about copepods as usual, but this talk will provide a deeper understanding of what it takes to feed the offspring of your fish and keep them healthy and beautiful.
